Peeping Tom the Movie

Surfing the television looking for anything intelligent, I came across the movie "Peeping Tom." This is an older film, made in 1960. It was noted before the film began that this UK movie started and ended the career of director Michael Powell. The only reason I can imagine it ended his career is because at the time it was filmed, the topic may have been a bit taboo. As expected, this movie has the look of one made in the day. The critics trashed in at the time, but now it has become a cult classic.

Synopsis: A mentally disturbed young man kills people. The thing is, he films them as he does it so that he can capture the look of fear on their faces as they die. When I read the movie description, I figured I'd give it a few minutes of my time to see if it was worth watching. I personally thought the movie was very good. You can see that the camera-man almost fights himself as he is doing the deed. He's not so much a murderous soul as a person who must fullfil a need. He shows another part of himself as he makes friends with the young lady who lives downstairs. He almost seems childlike - but he has some skeletons in his closet - that's for certain.

...

I thought the acting of the two main characters: Karlheinz Böhm (Mark) and Anna Massey (Helen) was excellent. The only really bad thing about this movie was the title. Mark's issue is not the fact that he's a peeping tom, and though the phrase is used a few times in the film, it's really irrelevant to the storyline.

My rating: 7 (out of 10 - 10 being best)
